NJ Pool Fence Laws and Regulations for Your Property

Deciding to add a swimming pool to your spa services is a big decision. From the cost involved, the permits and construction stages, working on a design, choosing materials, and the maintenance required, it is a detailed and time consuming process. While there are many custom stages of the process, there are also restrictions and guidelines that need to be followed. Depending on the state you live in, and the town you live in, there will be different rules and regulations that you need to follow. In this state, there are NJ pool fence laws that we need to abide by for all our New Jersey based projects.

Do I Need a Fence Around Pool?

This is a common question we hear from all our pool clients. And the answer is yes, however, there are options.

When in comes to New Jersey swimming pool rules, the NJ Law states that a swimming pool must be entirely enclosed by a barrier, a wall, or a fence that is at least 5 feet tall. This rule applies for both above ground and inground swimming pools.

With pool fence regulations, you can either surround your entire property, or a smaller fence that encloses only the pool area. But you need to have one of the other in order to build a pool on your property. It is a matter of preference. Some homeowners would like the entire yard enclosed. This is a nice way to fence in your backyard for children or pets, and have a definitive border from neighbors. Other homeowners choose to only fence the pool area, leaving the yard free. This is a personal aesthetic choice. Having a fence around pool, encloses the pool into it’s own area, making it safer to keep kids and pets out of the pool area.

How to Include NJ Pool Fence Laws into Your Design

Residential swimming pool regulations don’t have to hinder your pool design. In many cases, the addition of a fence to your property increases the value, while giving shape to the design. Plantings against the fence areas can soften the look of the hard wood. Some homeowners choose iron gates for a garden look. It all depends the architecture of your home, your personal style, and the budget you wish to spend. It is important to remember, to budget for a fence during your swimming pool process. This is an item that often gets overlooked and can turn into a larger price item.

Our architects and designers cooperated with aluminium fencing Brisbane and were available to help with the whole process, from permits and designs, through building and maintaining custom swimming pools and spas. It is important to work with a company that understand the permit process with NJ pool fence laws.

Inground Pool Depth

The process of building a swimming pool is a detailed one. With all the time, money, and decisions that go into it, it can feel like an overwhelming production. Working with a landscape architect or pool designer helps make the process easier to navigate. It provides you a professional who can be there from start to finish, with decision making assistance along the way. Choosing materials, colors, pool features and determining the ideal inground pool depth for your property all need to be taken into consideration. So how do you decide what works best for you and your family?

Consider your lifestyle and the overall purpose of the pool. Will it be for diving or leisure? Swimming laps or shallow for games and children? While it may not seem like a major decision initially, the length and depth of your pool will dictate much of its function, and to keep it clean the use of a intex pool pump is the best tool you can use for this function.

Determining an Inground Pool Depth that is Best For You

The staggered depths of three to six feet on a slanted pool is the common depth choice for most homeowners. That is the most common option presented when designing a new inground pool. Everything is customizable, however to best suit the needs of the client. Some factors to consider when deciding the final dimensions include the height of family members, the purpose of the pool, and the size of the pool.

For example. The shallow end needs to be a depth that is comfortable for all your family members to be able to stand. If playing volleyball or basketball or pool games in the shallow end is a priority, the depth needs to accommodate everyone from children to adults comfortably. Sun decks are a great addition to include in the shallow end, to allow for safe play for young children. However, they often take up much of the playing space for older children in the shallow end.

Swimming pools should have a minimum depth of three feet to accommodate for both adults and children, and a maximum depth of four to five feet, for safety. For diving, you will need deeper. If you have a family of swimmers who swim laps, the minimum depth of five feet is necessary as well as a length of 25 meters.

Inground Pool Depth Options

What is the minimum depth for diving in a pool? The safe pool depth for jumping or diving is at least 9 feet deep. Keep in mind, the deeper the pool the more water needed. Inground pool depth will also effect the cost involved in filling and cleaning the pool.

Important Factors to Remember:

  • Diving – least 9 feet deep
  • Sun decks provide a nice shallow option in the pool for lounging, and safe children play.
  • Height of family members is to be taken into consideration in determining depths.
  • Deeper means more water and more to clean, which will increase budget.

Summer time means pool time. With the heat waves we have been experiencing this month, there is nowhere to better beat the heat, than in a pool. Ever wish you could lay out, while still being in the water to cool off? That is what a tanning ledge is for, and often used in today’s pool designs. Forget rafts or tubes that float around and move, a tanning ledge allows a platform with shallow water to sit in and relax while still being in the water. It also provides another level to your design, an elevated feature to impress and entertain and enjoy for all ages.

What is a Tanning Ledge?

Also commonly referred to as a sun ledge, swim out shelves, Baja shelf, tanning shelf, pool ledge, etc. These are shallow platform cut into the granite pool, providing a space for lounging. Many homeowners with young children enjoy these, as a safer place to sit and play in only 1′ of water. We find with our clients that tanning ledges are a popular addition with customizing a swimming pool. They have become a feature gravitated towards more often than ever before. It is possible to add custom umbrella holes into the shelf, as well as water loungers that are made to withstand still water for months at a time. This adds a new fun element of design to consider and customize.

How deep should a tanning ledge be?

While all our pool designs are completely custom, the ideal depth for a tanning ledge would be 12 inches. One foot of water is enough to cool off feet and provide a comfortable depth to sit in, for children too, safely. The pool tanning ledge depth could be adjusted to be deeper, or more shallow, depending on the needs of the family.

When deciding on whether a tanning ledge for swimming pool is best for you, consider the ways you wish to use your custom pool. If having a water section that allows for lounging and children play is the most important, this feature would be more of a priority in your design. Other homeowners would argue having a patio gives plenty of space for tanning by the pool, and would not cut into the shallow end space. If having a spacious shallow end for pool games – like volleyball or pool basketball, a shelf may cut into the space you need.

Depending on your budget, and size of property, would depict your ability to add features to your design. It is important to have an idea from the beginning, on the goal for your pool design. Working with a landscape architect or pool designer, will help to make sure the plans you make are beneficial to your lifestyle.

With the ever changing weather we have on the east coast, there is a lot to keep in mind with creating a outdoor space. Having extremely warm months, and drastically cold ones, the need for different features throughout the year vary. From swimming pools in the summer, to fireplaces in the winter, there are many options to consider. When working with clients, we always tell them to keep in mind transitioning your space in each season. Why not combine the two? With poolside fire features, your project evolves through all types of weather.

With poolside fire features, the combination of fire and water is an elemental design. We find that the two complement one another, adding a layer of interest as well as an eye-catching factor to the backyard. There are different types of poolside fire features that can be incorporated into a design. Fire pits, fireplaces, fire walls, fire orbs, and fire lanterns all work well with swimming pool designs.

With the addition of a fire pit near pool, the transition from warm days into cooler evenings is made easier. A pool with a fire pit area provides extra warmth for family members or guests, to enjoy seating outdoors and taking in the view. It creates another living space outside.

Ideas for Poolside Fire Features Designs

Incorporating an outdoor fireplace by pool provides a great seating area, while creating a living room to be enjoyed in the outdoors. With larger custom built in fireplaces, the option to mount an outdoor TV on top is a popular one. Bringing football season outside, in front of the fire, creates the ultimate outdoor entertainment space. Smaller size pool fire pits designs, are another custom option for a smaller budget, while still providing warmth and a new seating area to enjoy.

Recently, we worked on a project that incorporated a pool fireplace right into the swimming pool design. With limited space to build a free standing fireplace, we created a fire feature directly into the pool, that doubled as a poolside fireplace, as well as a waterfall. This brings the fire and water combination as close as can be. We have also built fire walls into swimming pools, adding a smaller, fire like shelf as a backdrop to the pool. You can visit here for photo examples of these projects. https://tranquilitypoolsnj.com/poolside-fire-features/

When it comes to poolside fire features, if you can dream it, we can create it. Design and creativity has come a long way, with running gas lines and using materials to create functional and aesthetic pool fireplaces. Adding these features helps warm up your property in the cooler evenings, and winter months that we experience on the east coast. It adds a longevity to your outdoor lifestyle.

If you are interested in creating a new outdoor space with a pool and fireplace, or if you are looking to create a new poolside fire feature to your existing pool, we are here to help.
